Crop, rotate & cover

Sometimes a scan comes out sideways, or with a big margin of tabletop around the photo. The Crop & Rotate tool fixes both. The same tool also chooses the book’s cover image.

Opening Crop & Rotate

On the page you want to fix, press Crop & Rotate (in the page’s action menu in Expert view, or the Rotate button on the Simple View toolbar for quick 90° turns).

Rotating

• 90° Left / Right — quick quarter-turns for a sideways scan.
• Flip H / Flip V — mirror horizontally or vertically. Rarely needed but useful if a negative was scanned backwards.
• Rotation slider — fine-tune the angle in tenths of a degree. Use this to straighten a scan that’s slightly crooked.

Cropping

Drag the corners and edges of the crop box to select the area you want to keep. The gray part around the box will be trimmed off. Pick an aspect ratio at the bottom if you want the crop to stay a specific shape.

• Free — any shape you want.
• Original — locks to the image’s current aspect ratio.
• 4:3, 16:9, 1:1 — common ratios.

Applying

Press Apply to save. The page image is replaced with the cropped/rotated version, and the thumbnail is regenerated. The original upload is kept on the server in case you want to redo it later.

Press Reset to discard your changes and start over. Press the × in the corner to cancel without saving.

Cropping or rotating a single item

Photos and other items glued to a page often sit at a slight angle, or were scanned sideways. Each item has its own Crop / Rotate control so you can level it without redoing the whole page.

1. Open the item from the page (click its outline, or pick it from On This Page).
2. Press Crop / Rotate in the item toolbar.
3. Use the rotation slider or the 90° buttons to level the photo, then drag the crop box tight around it.
4. Press Apply. The item focus view, downloads, and any future enhancement will use the leveled crop.

Press Revert Crop / Rotate on the item to drop the adjustment and go back to the plain page-shape crop.

Setting the book cover

Every book can have a cover image shown on the home page. In the Admin panel, find the Book Cover section.

1. Type the page number you want to use for the cover.
2. Press Preview & Crop. A crop window opens with a 3:4 frame (so the cover looks good at any size).
3. If the page has an accepted enhanced version, a Source toggle appears at the top of the controls. Pick Enhanced to crop from the enhanced art instead of the raw scan.
4. Drag the frame to pick the region you want for the cover.
5. Press Set as Cover. The book tile on the home page updates right away.
